The 2021 Drought
Minnesota is experiencing one of the worst droughts in the history of the state. We have not seen something similar to this since 1988 or even the dust bowl. As a result, the Mississippi River is reaching record lows, and the forests up north are catching on fire.
The Saint Cloud Dam was turned off Monday, August 16th, because the water level became too low. The last time the city turned off the dam due to low levels was over 30 years ago.
One of the few advantages of this drought is exploring. Islands that are usually only accessible by boat are now reachable by walking across the river bottom.
The drought has gotten to the point where one good rain will not be enough. We need continuous rain to refill all the water reservoirs that have been depleted.
