Bird Feeders Protect Chickens

Bird feeders can help protect your chickens from predatory birds. This is because the bird feeders commonly attract blackbirds, red-wing blackbirds in this instance. When these blackbirds see that a hawk or eagle is flying above, they will fly up and drive the big bird out of the region. The birds do this so that they can sleep comfortably at night, knowing those birds will not be in their territory.

Having these big birds driven out of the area means it is safer for the chickens to free-range. In addition, other predators such as foxes or coyotes do not typically attack during the day, and our chickens get locked up at night, making the hawks and eagles their number one predator.

Keeping the bird feeders full is essential to keeping the big birds out of the region and keeping our chickens safe.
