USA Takes the Lead in Total Medals
With an intense couple of days, the US Olympic team has been able to rack up the medals with nine golds, eight silvers, and eight bronzes totaling 25, more than any other team. Although Japan has won ten gold medals, they only have two silvers and five bronzes.
One of the major headlines over the past couple of days is Simone Bile’s choice to withdraw from the team finals. Simone mentioned her mental health as a reason for pulling out. However, something that caught many people’s eyes was how Bile might have been judged unfairly. With the intense level of some of her moves, she was not rewarded total points because they were too far advance.
In other big news, the US softball team was able to secure a silver after falling to Japan 0-2. It was the first time in 14 years that softball was in the Olympics.
Surfing is in its very first year of Olympic existence, but surfing is known around the globe. Ranked first in the world, Carissa Moore of Hawaii dominated her way to a gold medal.
