Total Medal Count, US Takes Commanding Lead
With the Olympic games wrapping up this weekend, it looks like the US will walk away with the most medals yet again.
With a total medal count of 98, the US is far above the rest of the competition. The next closest is China, with 79 total. We have almost 20 more medals than China, but they still have more gold medals than the US. China has come in first in 36 competitions, whereas the US has only 31 first-place finishes. After gold, China falls behind the US significantly, with 26 silvers compared to the US 36 and 17 bronzes compared to 31 for the US.
One interesting thing of note is that while the US is in first, the 2016 American team had more total medals with 121, the most all-time. There are still three more days of medals to be given out, but we need quite a few to break that record.
