Petra, The Lost City

When one thinks of a dream vacation, they usually do not think about Jordan. London, Bali, Paris, Bora Bora, Rome, these are some of the most visited places every year, however, if I could go anywhere in the world, it would be Petra, Jordan.

A city carved entirely out of sandstone, the Nabataeans were tremendous architects. They were able to create beautifully carved buildings into the side of mountains that have been seen millions of times.

If you have ever seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Mummy Returns, Aladdin (2019), or Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, then you have seen the city of Petra.

While the beauty is already staggering, researchers say that they have discovered only 15 percent, while the desert sand buries the rest. Some locations found are bab al siq (the gateway to the entrance), the siq (the entrance), and a 4000-seat theater. If you have ever seen a photo of Petra, you will most likely have seen the Treasury. Over 130 feet tall and crowned with an urn, this building has been discovered to be a sort of graveyard. Local legend even says that the urn on top of the Treasury is filled with a king’s treasure.

Along with the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum in Rome, Chichen Itza in Yucatán, Mexico, Machu Picchu, Peru, the Taj Mahal, and Christ the Redeemer, Petra was named one of the new seven wonders of the world on July 7th, 2007.
