Olympic Update

Yesterday was a hectic qualifying day for both archery and rowing. The women’s induvial team was able to qualify 5th with Mackenzie Brown, 17th with Casey Kaufhold, and 24th with Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez. The men were able to qualify 2nd with Brady Ellison, 29th with Jack Williams, and 47th with Jacob Wukie. The women will compete for their medals on Friday, July 30th, and the men on Saturday, July 31st.

Having no men competing in the individual, double, or quad races meant it was up to the women to show what the US is made of. Kara Kohler, the individual rower for the US, was able to qualify first in her heat. The doubles team, consisting of Kristina Wagner and Genevra Stone, qualified second in their heat behind New Zealand. The quad team, made up of Cicely Madden, Alison Rusher, Meghan O’Leary, and Ellen Tomek, unfortunately, could not guarantee a spot in the next round and will have to race again for a chance at the medals.

Today is an exciting day as the first medals of the Olympic games will be given out and several other sports starting. Medals will be awarded in team archery, cycling (road), weightlifting, fencing, team shooting, judo, and taekwondo. Other sports that officially start today will be indoor and beach volleyball, table and field tennis, water polo, swimming, hockey, handball, boxing, badminton, and gymnastics.
